Meet our Staff


  • Principal


    Mrs. Terry Bird currently serves as our principal. This past summer she and her husband to moved to St. Joseph from Raymore, MO. Mrs. Bird has over thirty-five years in the teaching ministry. She received her Bachelor of Science degree while at Concordia University, Seward, NE. Terry received her first Masters degree in Special Education from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk). While serving in Kansas City, she pursued her second Masters degree in Education Administration and graduated from Emporia State.Serving the Lord is a great joy. Spending time with children and teachers is a special blessing. Terry and Tom have three children and six grand-daughters that now have an open invitation to visit St. Joseph anytime.

  • Office Manager


    Jessica Maynard has served as our Office Manager at Trinity since 2009. She also serves as the Pon Poms advisor and helps with the Variety Show and Operettas. Jessica graduated from Hope College in 2005 with a BA in Dance Education (K-12), minoring in Business and Religion. She lives in Stevensville with her husband, Lewis, and three boys Caeleb, Micah, and Joseph. 

  • Kindergarten


    Katie Hartfield has served 5 years total at Trinity- from the "Mom's & 2's" program, to being the Preschool coordinator, to volunteering at Trinity in various areas of family ministries. Katie has her BA in Early Childhood Education, specializing in Art from Concordia University Chicago. She has 3 children who all attend Trinity- Abbie, Luke, and Sara Beth. When not at Trinity, Katie likes to spend time outdoors, camping, running, playing with her children, and travelling throughout the U.S.

  • 1st  Grade


    Kim Kelly has served at Trinity since 2006. During her time here she has volunteered, been a substitute teacher, taught Kindergarten and is now in her current position as our 1st grade teacher. Kim earned her BA from Hope College and her Colloquy from Concordia. She is currently working on her Master’s Program through Grand Valley University. Kim is the mother of 3 beautiful children, Sam, Hannah, and Max who all have attended Trinity. Her husband Dave is the Principal at New Buffalo Elementary School. They have been married 23 years. They love to spend time with family, play tennis, and ride their Harley. Kim loves to be outside, plant flowers, and take walks.

  • 2nd Grade


    Susan Case was born and baptized at Trinity, returning (after 21 years) to teach Kindergarten. Since then she has taught preschool-fourth grades. Fall, 2010, she was honored for completing her 25th year of full-time teaching in the Lutheran Church. Her service as a Volunteer Youth Minister in Japan, a Vacation Bible School leader in Russia, a chaplain at Lakeland Hospital, and RAINBOWS coordinator, reflect her love of ministry, people, and geography. She graduated from Concordia University System, Seward, Nebraska, with a social studies/geography major and theology and psychology minors. She earned her Masters in Elementary Education from WMU in 1992. Mrs. Case lives in Saint Joseph with her husband, Duane, and enjoys life with an extended family of nine children, their spouses, and 19 grandchildren. 

  • 3rd Grade


    Alison Schmidt, the youngest of five children, was born and raised in Holt, MI. She graduated from a K-12 Lutheran school in 2011. She attended Concordia University, Ann Arbor and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education – Language Arts in May 2015. In her free time, Alison enjoys reading, singing, and exercising. She loves to visit her parents, siblings, nephews, and niece. Alison is excited to begin her first year of teaching and knows that it is just the first step in an exciting new adventure.

  • 4th Grade


  • 5th/6th Grade


    Heather Steffens has been teaching at Trinity since 2007. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia University, River Forest and a Master’s Degree in Reading and Language Arts from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Heather enjoys spending time with her husband and three children and loves living near Lake Michigan.

  • 7th & 8th Grade


    Tim Ernst has served at Trinity since 1988. He is married to Cindy Ernst and has 3 children and 3 grandchildren. He met his wife at Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Both Tim and Cindy graduated from Concordia College Seward, Nebraska. Tim earned his Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan in Science Education. Tim grew up in Friestadt, Wisconsin. He has an identical twin brother who also teaches math/science in St. Louis, Missouri. Tim loves teaching especially math and science at the middle school level. He enjoys coaching soccer and track.

  • Facilities Manager


    Louie Miltibarger has served as Facilities Manager at Trinity since 2004. After attending Trinity for elementary school, Louie graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1982. Louie and his wife, Dallas, have three children and five grandchildren.
